After five grueling months of hard work the girls’ varsity basketball team turned their focus to the IHSA playoffs. They started the playoffs with a bang with thrilling one point victory over Thornton Fractional South in come from behind fashion in the first round or the Carl Sandburg Regional. The girls trailed by as many as 15 in that game. The Lady Astros now take on the top seeded Mighty Macs from Mother McAuley.

The girls have brought home some great victories throughout the season. Some of the Lady Astro’s key victories came against the Bremen Braves, Thornton Fractional South Rebels, Oak Lawn Spartans and Evergreen Park Mustangs. The team’s conference record thus far is 8-5. The victory over Oak Lawn was their first in five years. They also recently beat District 218 rival Richards.

Last Friday the Astros won in a nail biter over Evergreen Park. In that game the Lady Astros trailed by two points with just three seconds on the clock. After coach Gamino called timeout, inbounder, Kayla Jackson, hit team captain Kylie Radz and the unguarded Radz hit the open three to give the girl’s an exciting buzzer beater victory.

In that game Radz scored a career high 20 points. Veronica Janik also known as Vbron James, now has the school record drawing 20 charges in a season. She tied the record of 17 during the Rich Central game. She did not share the record for long drawing 2 more charges in the same game.

Senior night was against Richards. The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday, February 5 but was postponed to the following night due to inclement weather conditions.

The starting lineup featured all seniors. The starting lineup included the seniors, Radz, Janik, Regan Monahan and Sabreen Ballout. Jessica Alba was the first substitution.

In the first half the Astros and Bulldogs held a 19-13 edge over the Bulldogs. After a seesaw battle in the second half the Lady Astros held on for a hard fought 47-43 victory over their District 218 rival.

Captain, Kylie Radz, put up two 3-pointers in the first quarter.

Although second quarter wasn’t as fast paced as the others; Sabreen Ballout did drain another three. Throughout the season Ballout has made countless three pointers making it look practically effortless.

Ballout did it again at the end of the third quarter with her buzzer beating three. That shot wrapped up one really good quarter. Sabreen Ballout also got a fast break after her steal and put up another two points. Kylie Radz scored her third three pointer. Junior, Mackenzie Jasudowicz, also put two points up for the Astros on a 12-0 run.

The fourth quarter saw lots of defense especially from Veronica ‘Vbron’ Janik and Regan Monahan, Both these strong defenders also made big shots. Janik hit two under the basket and Monahan scored three baskets

As the last few seconds approached all smiles grew on the Astros’ faces. They beat the Richards Bulldogson their Senior Night, one to remember. The girls all jumped in excitement and celebrated together on the court while the crowd stood on their feet.

Congratulations to the Shepard Astros on not only their senior Night win, but a terrific season. All the girls have grown so close and developed such a chemistry you could see it from the stands.

Radz was named to the all conference team. Monahan, Janik, and Ballout were all conference honorable mention.

On February 14 Sandburg High School will hold their three-point contest and four of your Shepard Astros will be attending, Jessica Alba, Sabreen Ballout, Regan Monahan, and Kylie Radz.

Good luck to the girls in the post season.
