Shepard placed sixth in the IHSA Journalism Sectional at Homewood Floosmoor High School on April 13.

Senior Adam Sapit was sectional champ in headline writing and junior Emily Jordan also qualified for state finishing third in advertising. The two students completed in the state finals at Heartland Community College in Bloomington on April 26.

Sapit was surprised by his victory, “I didn’t expect to make it in headline writing, but the whole experience was fun,” stated Sapit.

Emily Jordan was shocked when she heard that she qualified, “Going down to state was a valuable experience that I will always remember.”

Senior Emily Bowman a double state qualifier a year ago in both newspaper design and sports writing narrowly missed making a return appearance.

“Emily has been an asset to the Freedom Seven for the last three years,” said advisor Mike Smith, “She along with McKenzie Rey have had outstanding journalism careers here at ABS and they will greatly be missed. I have no doubt however that both will be successful at the next level.”

Sapit, Jordan, and Bowman were not the only Astros that  enjoyed success at the H-F. Aleks Arrambide finished fourth in yearbook layout double page spread.

Doula Bali was sixth in yearbook caption writing; and the tandem of Gabriella Nimon and Ella Wegrzyn came in fifth in theme design.

Although Sapit and Jordan did not place at state, their advisor was proud of their efforts.

“I am extremely proud of all the students that completed at sectionals,” said Smith. “Emily and Adam represented Shepard admirably at both sectionals and state. I will greatly miss all the seniors especially my veterans Bowman, Reh, Sapit, and Nadia Amoah.”
