 2019/2020 chess team

The chess team has a new look this year. New head coach Aminah Garcia upping the competition by competing with other teams on Saturday outside of the conference. The goal is to face stiffer and tougher competition.  This is taking it to a new level from what the team has done in the past.

With two of the players on the team ranked top 10 in conference, Paul Peretz, and Love Patel the forecast looks bright. They have led the team to some huge conference victories.

They set examples at a high level to make the team want to work harder and become better.

The Astros have big wins in conference against Richards twice, Eisenhower, and Evergreen Park. The team has also fallen short against Argo, Oak Lawn, Reavis and Eisenhower with a 4-4 record in conference.

The goals set for the chess teams 2019/2020 season is to maintain a positive record with a trip to the state tournament. They have a great chance at having a state qualifier.

The new head coach Aminah Garcia introduced the team to Saturday tournaments where they could find higher level competition and can get more practice in.

With a couple kids graduating from last year the new lineup includes Zoe Hill, Samuel Donald, Ryan Hogan, Paul Peretz, Love Patel, Lazaro Vigil, Julian Sanchez, James Sanchez Dylan Cervantes, Donivin Truty, Dominic Karkoszka, Brandon Hill, Alexis Diaz, Cam’ron Hardy, Alejandro Jarmaillo, and Adarius Tillman.

Garcia hopes to get the team working together to help each other improve on certain skills that not everyone has, but with the senior leaders this year the team found a way to work together and make each other better.

The team resumes competition in January.

The team will be working on their skills and practicing everyday to be prepared for the more competitive part of the season. The chess team hopes to follow up going to state as they did last year in the 2018-2019 season in Peoria.
